- ANARTS News Bulletin 831 16th October 1994
-
- Well, this weekend is JOTA. I hope you have offered a few
- minutes of your time to help get young people interested in
- Amateur Radio. These youngsters are our replacements, and our
- growth factor ... How many amateurs do we need to keep our
- frequencies, to stop the commercial grab?
-
- Remember, amateurs have been responsible for many advances
- used for commercial radio application, and also that these
- innovators need to have frequencies to experiment. If you have
- friends who have been inactive for a period, why not talk them
- into dusting off their gear and getting back up on air. Usage
- is automatically recorded by the department off air, and every
- few minutes being active on air helps maintain our frequenc-
- ies.
-
- Keep our frequencies -- use your radios.
-
- --------------------------------------------
-
- RTTY Digital Journal name and frequency change
- ----------------------------------------------
- The new name for this magazine is now the Digital Journal and
- it has gone from ten issues a year to twelve per year.
-
- If you are thinking of subscribing, there was word of a hike
- in fees in 1995, so do it now. Cost per year is 35 dollars
- (US), in US funds. Address is PO Box 2550 Goldenrod, FL 32733-
- 2550 USA.
-
- This is - the - journal for digital radio and is well worth a
- subscription. It has all the rules for contests, articles on
- the newest modes, and comparisons with established ones, dx
- news, and lots more (no -- I do not get a free subscription,
- hi hi -- I just think its worth it.).

- I for one got a PO box. My friends know where I live, and so the casual
- scanner user does not. I can give out certain info, and not really worry
- about it. Speaking of privacy, do you have code words set up with your
- cable company or other utilities? Why, you might ask. What do you have to
- do to order a pay per view movie. Call up and order it? How do they know
- it is actually you. Make sure you have them ask a code word before making
- any type of changes to your system. How would you like itif someone would

- $50 pay per view event....Just a thought.....

- Subject: JOTA '94 and Intentional Interference
-
- Jamboree-on-the-air is a great event to promote amateur radio
- to Boy and Girl Scouts all over the world. I am sure the 99.9%
- of all Hams fully support this effort. I heard and worked
- several stations that opened their stations to show ham radio
- to the kids and leaders. I enjoy seeing the reactions of the kids
- as they talk to others around the country.
-
- BUT... It was very embarassing to have intentional interference
- by a very very SICK person who made unacceptable comments
- on the air so that my boys and their leaders could hear them.
- I apologized and ignored him the best I could, but it still bothered
- me a great deal. I know there is nothing I can do about it now, but
- I just wanted to express my disappointment in this one person.
-
- If anyone knows anyway to deal with this problem, it would be
- appreciated. Obviousely, he never identified himself.
-
- Again, though, thanks to all those hams who did help out.

- Hello;
-
- Does anybody out there know what "Trunk LAN Mobile Radio" is? I had
- this term thrown at me in a meeting and had no idea what the other person

- That light is a radio frequency is going to be important as an underpinning in

- think everything man does is "against nature".
-
- We're bathed in RF. Born, live and die in it. Perfectly natural stuff. Our

- I believe the radiological health folks did initially and that the FCC is
- involved now (look at the labels on things like your CD player or the grocery
- store scanner). I want to say it's Health and Human Services (was part of the
- old HEW) that worries about things like how much laser light you are exposed
- to by the POS scanners and such.

- : recall that they were around 100 mw - which would mean the effective

-
- This isn't right. The mouth of the horn is too close for the
- gain to fully develop--you are still in the near field region.
- Otherwise, you could run into the paradox of two horn antennas
- being close together, and getting more energy out of the
- antennas than you put in.
-
- One of the curious things about really big dishes is that you
- can reduce the field strength away from the dish by making it
- bigger! Imagine a huge dish 1 mile across, perfectly built.
- You will get a tremendous amount of gain at X band, but you
- have to go so far away to see it that the field strenth isn't
- really that strong. Not surprisingly, you can stand anywhere on
- the surface of the dish and the field will be pretty weak.
-
- Where is the most dangerous spot on the big dish?
-
- At the feed--but the feed is really a little antenna without
- much gain. Thus, you should really worry about stuff like
- open waveguide and tiny antennas more than big horns or dishes
- at microwaves.
